Registrations for Donegal Camino 2023 to close on August 20th
The 4th Donegal Camino takes place from 3rd to the 9th September 2023
7 Days glorious days of hiking and walking in Donegal to support Cancer Care West
The Donegal Camino which takes place from the 3rd to the 9th of September in support of Cancer Care West is rapidly approaching. Growing in popularity year on year, this unique walking festival centered on the ethos of the Camino is a pilgrimage across the stunning hills, mountains and coastal loop walks of Donegal with the aims of showcasing Donegal as a world class walking and hiking destination while also raising much needed funds for Cancer Care West Services across Donegal.
Already heavily subscribed with walkers from across the island of Ireland, Scotland, the US and Europe, the organizing committee have announced the closing deadline for registrations as midnight on Sunday 20th of August 2023.
Founder Peggy Stringer said, “We’re once again so excited and humbled by the interest in the 4th Donegal Camino, registrations are flooding in from Donegal, all across Ireland along with walkers from Scotland, France and the US this year.” She went onto say, “Safety of our walkers is our utmost priority and there after showcasing the beauty of our beloved Donegal along with raising funds for Cancer Care West. Taking all things into consideration, we will now close registrations at midnight on Sunday 20th of August 2023”.
The Donegal Camino which opens on Sunday 3rd September in Malin Head in Inishowen is rapidly becoming Ireland’s most popular walking and hiking festival and once again the Donegal Camino itinerary will delight walkers and hikers with a stunning network of loop coastal walks, hill and mountain hikes over 7 days before reaching its finishing point at Europe’s highest sea cliffs, Sliabh Liag on Saturday 9th September.
Led by the award winning Donegal based walking guide John McGroary and his team of professional walking guides, they will safely guide and entertain walkers as the Donegal Camino will weave its way from Lagg Church in Malin Head in Inishowen over the hills and coastlines of beautiful Donegal while also taking in Knockalla Mount Ridge, HornHead a sunrise climb of Errigal, the Gaeltacht region and Toraigh – the famous Tory island, Maghera Ardara before the ultimate peak of Europe’s highest Sea Cliffs, Sliabh Liag.
Walkers can choose to register for individual days, a package of 3 days or the entire 7 days on www.donegalcamino.ie. Combining the ambitions of showcasing the world class walking and hiking in Donegal along with its excellent hospitality, food, accommodation and charity angle, the Donegal Camino brings together people from all corners of Donegal, the island of Ireland, Scotland, the US and beyond. Each walker has their own personal agenda for walking the Donegal Camino, all of which contributes to the true essence and atmosphere of a Camino and pilgrimage walk.
Noel Cunningham, Board Member of Cancer Care West, Donegal Camino Founding Member, TV Personality and Harvey’s Point Ambassador is on hand to support walkers in their fundraising initiatives. “Since it’s foundation the Donegal Camino has donated €75,600 to Cancer Care West which is invested in the wonderful support centre in Letterkenny and other services for cancer patients and their families in Donegal. A much needed service, we’re very proud of the growing Donegal Camino, the generosity of walkers, our corporate sponsors and those who donate, collectively we’re developing a precious and memorable walking events which supports a much needed service here in Donegal”.
The Donegal Camino voluntary committee includes founder Peggy Stringer, former Donegal Persons of the Year, Deirdre McGlone and Noel Cunningham who’s also a board member of the important Donegal based charity Cancer Care West. The original committee are joined by Noreen D’Arcy D’Arcy Marketing & PR from Galway who’s strong Donegal family connections and Donegal businessman, John Mc Namara of Sendmode. The committee is keen to grow its skill base while growing the Donegal Camino and they welcome all support and ideas for fundraising to increase the donation to Cancer Care West. They keenly invite Donegal Businesses across the county to fundraise or donate on www.donegalcamino.ie or to join for a day’s walking. In addition there are many ideas to help fundraise from bucket collections, to coffee mornings, garden parties or the traditional sponsorship cards. The Donegal Camino are very grateful for the support of partners Donegal Tourism and Gallaghers Bakehouse once again this year and welcome other interested sponsors for 2023.
